When he painted The Death of the Virgin (1601-1606), Caravaggio had been working for about 15 years in Rome. The painting was commissioned for the family chapel of a Vatican judge in the church of Santa Maria della Scala in Trastevere, but was refused as unworthy by the church clergymen.

Lorsqu’il peint La Mort de la Vierge vers 1601-1606, Caravage travaille depuis une quinzaine d’années à Rome. Commandée pour orner la chapelle familiale d’un juriste du Vatican dans l’église romaine de Santa Maria della Scala in Trastevere, l’oeuvre fut refusée par le clergé qui la jugea indigne du lieu.
